An Interview with the Dutch Boy George a.k.a Gerard de Haan,

1.Please share a little about you're self and your background.

*Well I am Gerard de Haan born at 13 June 1969 , so my birthday is just one day
before George's birthday.
I lived the first 20 years in Friesland and I did schooling at that time for
Fashion and clothing.
In 1990 I moved to Kampen where I did schooling in the Art academie-Fashion, I didn't
feel like doing the designing in clothes but I did like to do the Illustration and I graduate in that.
I always loved to do be busy with Make-up and Hairstyling and ultimately I became a Professional grease painter,
for living and I work mainly for TV.
I currently living for 10 years with my Boyfriend Cas who's working as a window-dresser for a big clothing concern
And we live in a lovely old house which is build in 1848 with 3 persian cats.

2.When was the first time that you had the feeling that you wanted to sing?, and what was you're inspiration?

*I all ready started singing when I was a child, and at the age of 14 I started doing a serveral of Playback
contest as Boy George. After 2 years I started with Live singing and it sounded like that there was something
in my voice that appeared of Boy George, and went on with it.
Then I joined The(Dutch) Henny Huisman Sound mix show and I reached the half final in 1988.
My inspiration has always been Boy George but also Musical songs and the European Song Contest.

3*When was you're first performing for public and how was that experience?

* My first performing was with a Michael Jackson act when I was about 11 years old at a celebration
evening at the primary school, and everyone.
told me at that time that I would going to do this more often.
Secretly I do love to get the attention sometimes, but not all the time !LOL

4.What was you're motivation to imitate Boy George, and what have you're done to look as good as possible like him ?
*I started to experiment at my 14th with my mother's Make-up and wigs.
She had her own hairdresser's saloon which gives me also my inspiration for my creativity.
I actually don't do much extra to look like Boy George, and that I become older I started to look more like him.
I just grease painted my both eyebrows for half away and make them to look like his,
and I make with a shadow-effect his jaw line and nose. and I just create some nice eyes in his style.
With wigs I can square also a lots of things to.

5. How do you identify you're self with Boy George?

*Well I think I don't really do that, I got my own life I don't smoke or drink.
Except during my performing I feel like him and l feel like my voice is starting to change and sounds like his.
I prefer to sing with my own voice which is a bit hoarse and high,
And I don't like to create a voice,because that won't really bear.

6.Why don't you imitate the new look of Boy George, and just keep doing the 80's look?

*Well I do that sometimes also, but the usual viewer and listener at my performings only knows the garlic with the braids
I often do some new styles(like the Mac-look) in the front of the mirror at home, which looks pretty good to.
Although I am much less weight and you will notice that in my face with the new look.
I also have a haircut which is done with a trimmer so it appears like him to.
So at the point of view at the commercial position I'll just keep it in the 80's style.

7.What is your favourite song of Boy George or Culture Club, and what is the first CD that you ever bought of him?

*I still found Do you really want to read me as my favourite song.
And I also love it to sing it, and I also love to sing’ I just wanna be loved.
The first album that I've bought at that time was Colour by Numbers, after that I bought the first album of Culture Club.

8.Which songs of Boy George or Culture Club do you sing mainly,
and what do you think of the present music of Boy George, like The Twin?

*My repertoire consists of: Do you really want to hurt me,'I just wanna be loved,
'Church of the Poison mind, Time, I'll tumble 4 yea, Karma Chameleon
,Victims, I'll adore and Everything I own'.
I think the music of Boy George of this days is beautiful like The Twin,
but sometimes I found it to experimental, call me old-fashion.

9*Who or what is you're biggest inspiration?

* Well there are no special persons of things, though there are people for example in my environment,
who meant a lot to me at work like:Lorreta Schrijver(news-reader),my colleagues, my Boyfriend.
At my field of activity for instance Kevin aucoin and François Nars.
Boy George has always been my biggest inspiration, especially till my 20th,
Because of him I dared to experiment with make-up which was a important factor in my life

10.What do you think of Boy George, and what does he mean to you?

*I think he's tremendously and every time he's renovating in his music, especially in his garlic’s.
And every time when you think you've seen it all, than he already considered something new.
For me he'd remains always something magically, and when I see him accidentally on T.V than my heart always
beats a little bit faster.
My DVD player is always on Stand-by incase if . . .

11. What was the first concert you ever been to?
*Believe or not, but it was the Concert of Culture Club in Den Haag in 1984/85.

12.Who's the most important person in you're life at this moment?
*Well obviously my boyfriend 'Cas of course because he's also my buddy.
13. Who's according to you're biggest fan ?

*My boyfriend and my mother, but also the people at work, presenters(host's) of the RTL News,
who's also coming to my performings,so actually I have a small fan club.

14. What does inspire you in Make-up and what is you're preference?

*I'd named him all before’ Kevin Aucoin who unfortunally passed away to soon, François Nars
who was a Greasepaint and photographer, but also people on the street with beautiful make-up inspire me.
My preference goes to entire natural make-up till extreme heavy make-up(travesty)

15.What are you tips on the territory of Make-up?

*Just try things out, do not be fearful, you don't have to wear it necessary on the street.
At the day I wouldn't wear to heavily make-up, because it will be noticed that you're wearing to much make-up.
I just to wear creamy heavily make up in younger days, now I wear natural make-up.
I don't mind if they can see my make-up but it should not be deduced.
In my work I must look neutrally because I work with many different people.

16.Do you want tell us something over your coming-out?

*Well actually I already knew it when I was about 5 years old and I never had any problems with it.
I told my parents about when I was 23,but of course they already knew but we never spoke about it,
because it was already clear as it was.
Still it's difficult to tell people who are close to you

17.Gerard ! I have read in you're biography that you followed a training at that time,
at the Foundation Conamus and that you had singing lessons of Magriet Eshuys.
Do you still get singing lessons or not anymore, have you stopped that

*I've done a done a training during 2 years at the foundation Conamus and I graduated in 1990,
and I even allowed to give singing lessons myself, have done this for a while.
I do everyday exercises for a hour in my car when I'm going to work with instrumental ties,
because you're voice is a muscle which you have to maintain it well.

18.Are there lately songs by you recorded on CD or can we download it somewhere,
and are you possible going to perform in other country's asswell?

*Right now I have been busy with performings in Germany at the Christopher Street Days and in Belgium.
At my reservations office website you can hear a few numbers of me,
and also you can view a recording of a performing at the Nachsuite on Video.

19.What's you're favourite website?
*Obviously that's The Dutch Fan site of Boy George of course and everything what has to do with Boy George and Make-up.

20.What is, or was, your favourite Discotheque, Club, etc. where you have performed. And why?
*I once toured Spain for a couple of months. There where some great open-air clubs with swimming pools and foam parties.
I have some fun memories of that period.

21. What's your favourite music-style and who's your favourite artist(s)?

I love musicals. Eurovision Songcontest and music from the 80's.
My favourite artists are Boy George (of course), Culture Club and Sarah Brightman.

Last question!

22. If you ever come back after you're dead, who or what would you like to be?
I'd love to be a kitten! Sleeping, eating, etc..
